What is SEED?

With an eye towards building a brighter future, members of REAP experienced a grassroots effort that was exciting. The children of many members began to inquire about philanthropy and ask questions like “What is a Giving Circle?”, “What is the Men of Distinction Dinner? and “How can I get involved?”

Before long, SEED was born which stands for Students Engaged in Ethical Donations (SEED), which is a philanthropic initiative for black youth in high school or college to share their time, talents and treasures with their community. While encouraging the youth to give back and teaching to them principles to build generational wealth, it was important that SEED become a part of REAP’s journey, and train to become legacy givers.

Ultimately, SEED members will utilize their time and energy to make meaningful impact in their communities. SEED will fund smaller organizations throughout the valley, some student led and others that serve the youth.

SEED Structure

Membership

The qualifications potential student members must meet are the following:

  • Ages 16 and 21
  • Must be currently enrolled in High School, GED Program, College or Trade School
  • Required to serve 250 hours annually as part of one of the Committees of REAP (Finance, Development, Marketing, Grants, or Events)
  • Annual contribution of $80
  • SEED Chair Must serve on Executive Committee

Internship

REAP is also looking to partner with local universities and colleges. Partnered institutions can register as an internship host site to allow SEED members’ hours to count towards academic requirements.

Volunteering

Volunteer or “service” within the committee of their choosing and in the community. SEED members must complete 250 hours of documented service during their membership year.

Mentoring

SEED has a natural mentorship culture through close relation with REAP members. There is also a SEED mentorship workshop for members, hosted by REAP Chair in alignment with REAP’s Event cycle. Workshops include, money management, how to give, leadership training, and networking opportunities.
